200th Post
If you ever want to know some interesting, but ultimately pointless facts, I am definitely your girl. No matter how diverse the subjects that I am meant to be studying, I seem to have a talent for ferreting out random nuggets of knowledge. As this is the 200th post on this blog (what was I saying about wasting time on useless things?), I thought I’d share some with you. 20, ‘cos then it fits in with the 200th-post thing, y’see? (I set myself this number before actually thinking of things, so they get a bit more unrelated as you go down…)
- The Glasgow Subway is the 3rd oldest in the world, after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro
- The Geneva Bible (1560) was the first Bible to be produced using Roman rather than Gothic text, the first to introduce verse numbers, the first to include maps and diagrams, and the first to have marginal commentaries and rudimentary cross-references (via)
- Apparently, an apple in the morning gives you as much of an energy boost as a cup of coffee
- Pigs cannot look at the sky.
- The Bible is the world’s most bought book… but also the world’s most stolen book.
- Bananas are really herbs.
- A crocodile cannot stick out its tongue.
- A giraffe can clean its ears with its 50cm tongue
- The actor who played Bugs Bunny was allergic to carrots.
- The word “God” appears in every book of the Bible except Esther and Song of Songs/Solomon
- Alexander Graham Bell never phoned his wife or his mother because they were both deaf
- When the age you had to be to buy cigarettes in the UK (or maybe Scotland? Can’t remember…) went up to 18, so did the age at which you were allowed to buy crossbows.
- The best time to eat is just after you’ve been at the gym, as it then increases your metabolism for the rest of the day.
- Chillis apparently also increase your metabolism.
- Celery supposedly gives you less calories than it takes to digest… because it’s basically reconstituted cardboard.
- Fulton umbrellas are the best.
- According to the Times, an ointment available from French pharmacies called “Homéoplasmine” is the best thing ever for your lips. (I’ve tried it and it’s actually rather good)
- If you eat more than one apple a day, every day, then your teeth are likely to corrode due to the high acid content.
- You should not brush your teeth directly after eating, particularly after eating fruit, as the alkali + acid reaction is worse for your teeth than allowing the acid to neutralise gradually with your saliva.
- The maximum weight you should use if aiming to tone is 1.5kg; any more and you’ll bulk up your muscles.
