Spit
The game for two players that can go on for hours…
Objective: To get rid of all your cards
Cards and Players: 2 player game; play with one standard 52-card pack.
Deal: Each player is dealt 26 cards. They each lay out 5 piles on the table in from of them - one card face-up on top of 4 face-down; one face-up on top of 3 face-down; etc. The rest of the cards are placed in the centre of the table, separately from the opposing player’s.
Play: Each player turns over the top card of their stockpile and places it next to their opponent’s - these form the “spit piles”. Players then play simultaneously as quickly as possible, trying to place all the cards in front of them onto a spit pile (either player can play on either pile). A card placed on a spit pile must be one higher or lower than the one below it (i.e. you can play an Ace or a 3 on a 2, and a King or a 2 on an Ace). Suit doesn’t matter.
Once a face-up card has been played, the card below it can be turned over. If there is an empty space, another face-up card can be moved over to it, and the card below it turned over - there should be 5 piles as long as there are enough cards. If two face-up cards in different piles are the same number, you can move one card and stack it on top of the other.
If neither player can play, then both players agree to turn over the top card from their stockpile onto their respective spit piles; play continues as before.
When a player places down their last card, both players yell “Spit” and try to place their hand on the spit pile with the least cards. First there gets it; the other player gets the larger spit pile. The spit piles are added to the stock piles, and the game is re-shuffled and a new round played.
This continues until one player cannot complete their layout due to not having enough cards. The other player then gives them a “split card”, placed in the middle, which they must slap to win the game.
